My name is Jeanie Bell LeDet, but I prefer to be called “j.” I am originally from Opelousas, LA, but I am now a proud resident of Tulsa. I am a thriving single mother of six children: four boys ranging from 14 years old to 15 months, one daughter who is 9, and I am the legal guardian of my 7-year-old niece. I am very busy around the clock. Currently, I am enrolled at Community Care College, pursuing my Associate’s Degree in Occupational Science and Business Industry Management. I am a first-time college student and the only one of my mother’s four children to have obtained a high school diploma or equivalency. Moreover, I am the first in my entire maternal family to attend college with the hope of earning a degree. My goal is to successfully complete this program to honor my mother’s dying wish and fulfill my dreams. My mother passed away in May of last year, one day after I delivered my youngest child. Before she passed, she always told me to further my education and start an organization that I had been talking about since 2013. She named it “Bella’s Box” in memory of my infant daughter who passed away in 2013. The aim is to provide free or low-cost headstones to young mothers in need after losing an infant child. My mother believed in this dream and in me. My motivation comes from my children, those in need, and my late mother. I am driven, determined, and focused. I will overcome every obstacle that attempts to block my path to success. I look forward to becoming a valuable resource to all communities.
